1st Prize! The winner of a design competition for a new mobility hub offers both public transport and recreation in a dense urban district.

The city of Krefeld is in the midst of planning for the “Krefelder Promenade”, a recreational path at the level of the existing rail line that traverses the city. The Mobility Hub provides the opportunity to further expand this idea in the form of a elevated park.

The new Willy Brandt Plaza is an interchange between various modes of transport (rail, bus, auto, taxi and bicycle). The water feature at its center offers a bit of recreation as the splash of water generates a calming backdrop amidst the hustle.

The Mobility Hub integrates itself within the local context, strengthening the north-south axis between the existing main station to the north and the Reunification Plaza to the south, and enlivening the east-west axis of the Krefelder Promenade.

My intitial sketches envisioned the creation of green space in a dense urban district. As a team of architect, landscape architect, and transportation planner we worked to develop the idea into exciting and realistic vision. The effort was rewarded with a 1st Prize by the competition jury in January 2022.
