Central Station Quarter

A new mobility concept is the foundation for a revitalization of the urban quarter centered on Offenburg’s Central Station. Despite the presence of the historic train station the area has begun to show signs of stagnation and blight. A modernization of the mobility infrastructure in concert with the expansion of public space presents the opportunity to reverse the trend and create a lively urban node.

This holistic vision encompasses a reorganization of local traffic, the creation of a new bus depot (ZOB) for 16 bus lines, and a network of bicycle paths linked to mobility hubs offering 2,000 bicycle parking spots.

The plaza fronting the Central Station is envisioned as “shared space”. Vehicular access is limited to buses, taxis, drop-offs and pick-ups traveling at slow speeds. Shaded seating under large trees, a water feature and play equipment in protective islands create a pedestrian friendly environment.
